The Black Tang is one of the rarest fish seen in the hobby today. It’s jet black oval body is complemented with blueish pectoral fins. Like most tangs, the Black Tang is active and a heavy grazer. A tank no less than 180 gallons is necessary as these fish can get to 9 inches. They are not finicky with water parameters and standard reef parameters will suffice.
Although the Black Tang may act like an omnivore, their primary source of nutrition should be plant based. Seaweed strips are an excellent choice and will help boost their immune system. They feed constantly throughout the day. Small portions three times a day is adequate. Unfortunately, like all tangs, it is susceptible to marine ich, although the Black Tang is one of the hardiest tangs. Meaty items can compliment their diet occasionally, but for long term health seaweed, spirulina, etc. is recommended.
This species of tang is very territorial. It will not tolerate any other tangs in an aquarium unless the tank is more than 300 gallons. Even then there are no guarantees. The Black Tang for the most part is peaceful with all other fish of a different color.
Sometimes called the Black Longnose Tang due to its larger snout, this species needs an established tank with live rock and natural algae growth along with an open swimming area.
Overall, this fish is generally pretty hardy and adapts to aquarium like well. It’s completely reef safe and will not bother most fish other than conspecifics. In a large setup the Black Tang is sure to be a centerpiece with its curious and active nature.
