Sunburst Anthias – Serranocirrhitus latus
Care Level: Moderate
Reef Safe: Yes
Minimum Tank Size: 80 gallons
The Sunburst Anthias aka the Hawkfish Anthias is a colorful fish with shades of pink, orange and yellow. It’s generally a peaceful fish and only grows to around 5 inches. While it does not have any stringent water parameter requirements, it does have needs that must be met in order to thrive. The Sunburst Anthias needs a relatively large mature tank of at least 80 gallons. If planning on keeping more that one it’s best to add them all together at the same time. Rocks, caves and crevices are all necessary for this species of Anthias as it likes to spend its day at the bottom of the tank. The Sunburst Anthias doesn’t like bright light hence the tank setup has to be deep, but still with plenty of aeration for adequate oxygen levels.
This species can also be very shy, especially in the beginning. Large aggressive tank mates such as groupers and triggers may make it difficult for the Sunburst Anthias to acclimate and feed. They are completely reef safe and will not bother corals or inverts. Instead this planktivore will eat most small meaty preparations including enriched Brine Shrimp and Mysis Shrimp. For long term health we suggest a refugium setup with a self sustaining population of Amphipods and Copepods.
After a successful acclimation period this fish will become active and dart in and out of caves and crevices. The Sunburst Anthias is the perfect reef inhabitant for an intermediate aquarist with a large and deep tank.
